5 things not to miss in Zambrone

Must see Zambrone

La Marinella beach and the lion's rock

The beach of Zambrone is perfect for those who love snorkeling, thanks to the seabed rich in pebbles and marine life. You can admire fish of various species, corals, anemones, and seaweed. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or a turtle.

Among the most striking attractions of Zambrone Beach is the Scoglio del Leone, the largest of the rocks near Capo Cozzo, which separates the long stretch of sand at Marina di Zambrone from the series of coves with Caribbean-like colors.

This rock is shaped like a reclining lion and hosts an underwater cave that opens at a depth of about 10 meters. Inside the cave, you can observe stalactites, stalagmites, and colorful sponges.

Historic center

The center of Zambrone is located on the Poro plateau at an altitude of 222 meters, yet only 2 km from the coast.

Zambrone is characterized by the presence of numerous churches scattered throughout the area.

In the center of the town stands a picturesque amphitheater, where numerous theatrical performances are held, featuring Calabrian actors, as well as folkloric shows with both local and international groups. During the summer season, unmissable concerts of pop, classical, and symphonic music also take place.

Church of San Carlo Borromeo

The church dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo is located in Piazza San Carlo, in the village of Zambrone.

At the top of the facade is a small tympanum, inside of which is a circular-shaped clock.

The building was constructed after the 1908 earthquake, which damaged the pre-existing church. The Bishop of Nicotera-Tropea at the time, Mons. Felice Cribellati, decided to build a new church, which, according to popular tales, is believed to have been consecrated in 1930.

I 'friscatuli' and buttered beans

Both are typical dishes of the peasant culinary tradition, made with simple ingredients.

I ‘friscatuli’ or Calabrian ‘frascatula’ is an ancient, humble dish that dates back to the 14th century. It is made with polenta and turnip greens, reflecting the simplicity and resourcefulness of traditional Calabrian cuisine.

Butter beans (fagioli al burro) are a variety of white beans. They are slowly cooked in a ‘Pignata’ (a traditional clay pot) with ingredients like garlic, parsley, extra virgin olive oil, and sometimes chili pepper. The name ‘al burro’ comes from the creamy texture the beans acquire during cooking, without the actual addition of butter.
